This little creature could be a nightingale, although I can’t be sure as I’ve not ever seen more than a fluff of brown feathers taking hasty flight. Rarely seen, there are several of them singing their hearts out at Le Perchoir. They like the mature oaks, lime and walnut trees but definitely prefer the dense thickets of shrubs and hedgerows that surround the house, gite and garden. Apparently, they sing for 23 hours a day. How is that even possible? And all to attract a mate.
It is the last thing we hear as we go to bed, and the first thing I’m aware of in the morning. Though of course they have been singing their varied and melodic songs all through the night too. Beautiful!
As if the arrival of the nightingales was not enough, the rosa banksiae ‘Lutea’ is in full bloom, and temperatures are reaching 27 degrees for the second day on the trot.
Orchids are starting to pop up everywhere. There will be a succession of different varieties of them now until the end of May.
Apple blossom is wowing us with colour and fragrance.
Plus the largest lime tree has burst into leaf. And breathe…
Just down the road, we have a field of new arrivals. The cows have been sold and replaced with a herd of buffalo for mozzarella production. Who would have thought it in deepest Lot et Garonne? They are a bit timid so photographing them was not the easiest thing or did it give the best result, but here they are. Two babies as well.
The newly decorated Le Perchoir gite is open for business, and has hosted our first guests of the year.
Local farmers are sowing their sunflowers - France is waking up to warmth and sunny days. Summer is just around the corner. Fields will be sunny and yellow very soon indeed. 🌻☀️😊
