ABOUT

Le Perchoir

Gîte

Le Perchoir, 'the roost' in Frenchis a beautifully renovated, simple stone building that has been restored using as many locally sourced products and ethical materials as possible. Originally it was the home of ducks, chickens and rabbits. Now, Simon and Jill have created a peaceful and unique holiday home with many original character features.

Set in the middle of rural South Western France in the heart of the countryside, if you yearn for nightlife and parties then this is not the place for you! It's a place for lazy days; to chill out, relax and wind down among the fields and orchards that provide the plums, hazelnuts, walnuts, honey, duck and of course, the wine the area is famous for.

Your private terrace is a place to watch the beautiful sunsets with a glass of something cool in hand.

Or perhaps you prefer an evening dip in the large pool after a sunny day or to challenge each other to a table tennis tournament?

Whatever your preference, if you seek simple peace and tranquility then look no further.

Le Perchoir is waiting for you.

Living space

Renovated to a high standard throughout using local and recycled materials where possible, the living area consists of a large kitchen and dining area. Included in the kitchen is an under counter fridge with small freezer area, a dishwasher, a cooker,  a washing machine and dining table and chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped with cutlery, crockery, glassware, pots and pans and serving dishes along with tools and utensils in the traditional dresser unit. Two comfortable sofas are provided along with a chest full of board and card games, table tennis equipment and jigsaws.

Bedrooms and Shower/Toilet

Our two bedrooms echo the recycled and repurposed ethos of the restoration. One has a comfortable double bed and the other two singles. There is additional storage space underneath all of the beds. The shower room housing the toilet is finished in Moroccan tadelakt plaster giving a very unique appearance. In keeping with our ethos and to save water, the toilet is a modern composting toilet, despite it looking almost the same as a conventional WC.

Things to do

Bakery

Fresh artisan bread is available from a nearby farm and other ranges from local bakeries in Cancon, Monflanquin, Castillonnes and Villereal.

Leisure Activities

There are plenty of quiet cycle routes through the surrounding rural roads and tracks, and beautiful walks throughout the bastide towns and countryside. Canoeing is possible on both the rivers Dordogne and Lot which are a thirty-minute drive from the gite, in Bergerac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot respectively. Locally artists often run courses on painting and drawing. During the summer months there are many art exhibitions and music concerts.

Local area

Local towns of Villereal, Castillonnes, Monflanquin and Cancon provide further shops, restaurants and excellent markets. All are a ten minute drive away.

Markets

There is a market a short distance away in one of the local towns on every one of the seven days of the week. In the summer you can visit the weekly night markets, which allow you to sample all kinds of local produce, eating and drinking under the stars on long trestle tables with locals and tourists alike. The Saturday morning Villereal market is one of the best in the area.

Eating out

Local eateries with everything from pizzerias to Michelin-starred restaurants, are a short drive away.  Agen prunes are local to this area, as are foie gras, duck, walnuts and hazelnuts. Oh! and wine too! Along with the grand Chateau Monbazillac there are plenty of smaller vineyards and many provide tastings.

Cultural sites

Visits to Chateau Biron and Chateau Bonaguil provide history-filled dramatic locations and architecture. Chateau Le Bridoire is an excellent choice for those with young children. Chateau des Milandes, once the home of Josephine Baker provides a fabulous day out with something for all the family in a beautiful setting. La Roque Gageac is the site of a 15th century troglodyte fort and is another worthwhile outing.

Guest reviews

"Le Pechoir has been really tastefully renovated; it has great rustic charm, is beautifully clean and very well equipped. The garden area around the property is vast and the views across the open countryside are very beautiful, the pool is huge and a definite ‘plus’ for a family to enjoy. Villereal, the nearest village, is about 10/15 minute drive away and is a typical Bastide village with a great atmosphere and a good range of bars and restaurants. Jill and Simon are great hosts, making us feel very welcome. We’ll definitely be going back!"
